Protecting your computer from viruses and other threats is not difficult, but it does require consistent habits. Here are the key actions every Windows user should take to stay protected.

1. Install a Trusted Antivirus Program

Install a reputable antivirus program and keep it up to date. Antivirus software scans for threats trying to enter through your email, operating system, or files. Set it to update automatically so it stays current against the latest threats.

2. Do Not Open Unexpected Email Attachments

This is one of the most important rules. Many viruses spread through email attachments. If you receive an attachment you were not expecting — even from someone you know — do not open it until you verify with the sender that they actually sent it.

3. Keep Windows Updated

Microsoft regularly releases security updates that patch vulnerabilities in Windows. Turn on automatic Windows updates so your computer receives these patches as soon as they are available. An unpatched system is one of the most common ways viruses gain entry.

4. Use a Firewall

Windows Firewall can alert you to suspicious activity if a virus or worm attempts to connect to your computer. It can also block harmful programs from downloading to your system. Make sure Windows Firewall is enabled at all times.

5. Adjust Your Browser Privacy Settings

Being aware of how websites use your information helps prevent fraud and identity theft. Review your browser's privacy settings and make sure they are configured to limit what information is shared with websites you visit.

6. Use a Pop-Up Blocker

Pop-up windows can contain malicious code even if they look like legitimate advertisements. Use your browser's built-in pop-up blocker and keep it enabled. Most modern browsers have this turned on by default.

7. Enable User Account Control (UAC)

User Account Control notifies you whenever a program tries to make changes to your computer that require administrator-level permission. This gives you a chance to stop unauthorized changes before they happen — including changes initiated by viruses.
