Repair or Replace? When To Upgrade Your Old Laptop

One of the most common questions we hear at LAB Computer Consultants LLC is simple: "Is it worth fixing my laptop, or should I just buy a new one?" There is no single right answer for every situation, but there is a reliable framework you can use to make the decision with confidence.

The 50% Rule

A good starting rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than 50% of the price of a comparable new machine, replacement usually makes more financial sense. For example, if a new laptop with similar specs costs $600 and your repair quote comes in at $350, you are likely better off putting that money toward a new machine with a full warranty.

Consider the Age of the Device

Laptops typically have a useful life of 4 to 6 years before components like the battery, hard drive, and cooling system begin to show their age. If your laptop is under 3 years old, most repairs are worth making. If it is past the 5 to 6 year mark, we usually recommend putting repair money toward a replacement instead, since other parts are likely to fail soon after.

What Type of Repair Is Needed?

Not all repairs are created equal. Here is how we typically advise customers:

  • Battery replacement — almost always worth it, regardless of laptop age, since batteries are inexpensive relative to the whole machine.
  • RAM or storage upgrade — excellent value, often the single best way to make an older laptop feel fast again.
  • Screen replacement — worth it on a laptop under 4 years old; less so on an older budget machine.
  • Motherboard or logic board repair — this is the point where replacement usually makes more sense, since motherboard repairs can approach the cost of a new laptop.

What Do You Use the Laptop For?

A laptop used for browsing, email, and word processing has very different requirements than one used for video editing or gaming. If your needs are light, an older repaired laptop can serve you well for years. If your needs have grown beyond what your current hardware can handle, no repair will fix that gap.

Our Free Diagnostic Approach

When you bring a laptop to LAB Computer Consultants LLC, we diagnose the actual problem first and give you an honest, itemized quote before doing any work. We will tell you plainly if we think replacement is the smarter financial move — even if that means we do not perform a repair. Our goal is to save you money over the long run, not to maximize any single repair bill.
